JOHN STONE: Of HULL
John Stone first appears in Hull by 1644 when he had three homelots on "Town Hill". He was refered to as "fisherman/mariner". His wife was named Joan. Children (if any) are unknown.
Aspinwall 25 (10) 1646, page 267 says
"I certifyed that John Stone of Hull, in N.E., sometime of Chideock in Dorsetshire) mariner & Joan his wife is not living, John & Nathaniell Gallop being witnesses of her life".
In The Visitation of the County of Dorset (1623) There is an entry for Thomas Bishop of Wimdon in County Somerset, and wife Alice (Holman) of Barwick, County Dorset, having a daughter Jone Bishop who married a John Stone of Netherbery, Dorset. (at this point, only a possibility this is the Hull John Stone and wife Joan.)
Savage says "in his will of 5 May 1659, pro. 27 Jan. 1664, leav.to w. Joan all his real and pers. est. wheto pay L60 to the three ch. of his br. Simon wh. had liv. at Cothelstone in Co. Somerset, a. 6 miles N. or Taunton, sothat it would be infer. that he had no ch. and had come from the pt. of Eng."
Found in Cossington, Somerset Parish records:
Cossington: Hector (chr Feb 21, 1640) son of Simon and Joan Stone
Undoubtedly this is Hector mentioned by John Stone of Hull, Ma.
Hull Records:
April 10, 1656, Nauhawton (an Indian),deeds to Thos.Loring, John Stone, Nicholas Baker,Benjamin Bosworth, and the inhabitants of the town of Hull, "All that my Neck of Land comonly called by the name of Nantascut which neck is now called the town of Hull," five miles in length.Acknowledged in Boston, by Nauhaughton, July 12, 1683.
Salem 1648 “Stone Meadows” issue (From Winthrop Papers)
In a letter from Emanuel Downing to John Winthrop Dec 26, 1648...mentions the "FARRINGTONS" of Lynn who were keeping watch over a meadow (30 to 40 acres) in Salem owned by Goodman Stone of Natascott (Hull)...evidently there was a skirmish over who owned the land and John Stone was called before the court to testify at a trial at Salem the week previous. Evidently the Farringtons thought they owned it and Stephen Winthrop thought he did. I need to locate Essex Court records for this. In January 1649 Emanuel Downing again writes to Winthrop that the verdict was for Farringtons now owning Stone's meadow.
The original deed 1637 granted 30 more acres of land in Salem also granted a “meadow” “if they continued to stay with us” (Salem Waste Book)--- (sometimes attributed to John Stone of Salem/Beverly, but I believe based on the previous record, it is John of Hull)
In 1654 when Martin Stebbins petitions the General Court to seek permission to keep a house of entertainment and strong beers in Boston, John Stone heads the list of "Men from Hull" (NEHGR 143:254)
John Stone of Hull, husband of Joan died December 23, 1663. (Suffolk Probate 356)
Inventory of his estate included 5 acres of houselots, lands at Point Allerton, Sagamore Hill, Peddock's Island and Brewster's Island.Witnesses were Nichloas Baker and Nathaniel Bosworth.
Following John's death Joan deeded a small piece of land where the homestead stood to Charles Cambell and she sent to England for her cousin (nephew) Robert Goold to come.He evidently arrived because in 1686 he is one of three men taking Joan Stone's probate inventory.
Three years following John Stone's death another John Stone (Sr.) of Hull sells land:
A John Stone, Sr., husbandman sells land on Further Hill (formerly owned by a Chaffee to a Thomas Loring) in Hull in 1666.(witnessed by John Collines,William Haskell and Joshua Allen, all Essex men). (Suffolk Deeds 5:42;NEGHR143:254)
It is interesting to note that the above 3 witnesses were from Essex, specifically William Haskell (whose father Roger Haskell was stepson to John Stone of Beverly. see Beverly/Salem STONE lines)
In October 1686, Joan Stone's will was probated and inventory taken. Her will was written October 19, 1674 "being full of days and weak of body". She gives to Rev. Zachariah Whitman, 20s to the church, a cow to David Thomas (see below 1.) of Middleboro in New Plymouth, 20s to my husbands brother's children Symon and Hector (see below 2.) if they will come for it. 5s to my cuzin Robert Cooms, 30s in clothing to Simon Jacob...to my coz Wilkins in Boston 30 rods of ground promised to him..to Christopher Wheaton that house plot of ground that was laid to him and his wife Martha Wheaton...(and all the rest of her estate) to my loving cousin Robert Goold now living in hull, New England, to be his own forever. Witnesses were Abraham Jones (see below 3.) Zachariah Whitman and Benjamin Ingel. The inventory by thomas Collier, benjamin Loring, and Robert Goold. (Suffolk Probate file 1509;NEGHR143:254)
1. David Thomas:
1651 John Stone in a deed with Robert Stone (Mariner of Salem) and David Thomas buying land ofThomas Rix (Salem Deed Book 1:16)
2. Hector Stone: Found in Cossington, Somerset Parish records:
Cossington: Hector (chr Feb 21, 1640) son of Simon and Joan Stone
3. Abraham Jones:
Ann (Vassall) Jones, daughter of John and Judith (Borroughs) Scott Vassall, is of particular interest in Stone research as the Vassall'sare partners in trade with Thomas Stone of Lancashire/London. In Ann (Vassall)Jones will of 1640 (Waters 1317) she mentions 6 sons, 2 of which are found inJohn Stone of Hull’s will. One son is Abraham Jones, the other Thomas Jones. Abraham Jones is a witness to the will of Joan Stone (1686) and Thomas Jones has a house beside that of John and Joan. Abraham married Sarah Whitman, daughter of Rev. Zacharia Whitman, mentioned in the Stone wills. Of their children, a daughter Martha, who married Christopher Wheaton, also mentioned in the will,Joan Stone bequethed them a houselot (Suffolk Probate 1509)
