HUGH STONE: Of BARBADOS

There are few records surviving from the time period making our study of Hugh of Barbados difficult. While we refer to this Hugh Stone as "of Barbados" the only certainty that he resided there is in death as he is buried 3 October 1678, St. Michaels Parish. [Hotten].Another record in Hotten's : Hotten's "Original Lists of Person's of Quality" Hugh Stone among those living in the "Lists of those Livinge and Dead in Virginia Febr: 16, 1623."

Through research we believe Hugh Stone, merchant of Barbados descends from the Lancashire, England Stone family and was brother of Maryland's first Governor William Stone. (See Member's Only Section for research and in depth discussion of the Bretherton, Lancs Stone Family line). This family was involved with merchant/mariner networks, among them Maurice Thomson. Thomas Stone, uncle of Hugh had holdings on St. Kitts and Nevis as well as other Caribbean Islands. There is a Stone Plantation on Barbados. Andrew Stone (a relative) also died on the island:Andrew Stone, reported son of John Stone, esq. of Bretherton was also aligned with his uncles, brothers and cousins in the merchant network. His will establishes him in Barbados at the time of his death in 1658. (Notice the mention of his brother John and his remains of a voyage being in the hands of Morris (Maurice) Thomson.)
